Horseback safaris draw nature lovers to Narman Fairy Chimneys

ERZURUM

Known locally as the “Land of Red Fairies,” the Narman Fairy Chimneys are attracting growing numbers of nature enthusiasts with guided horseback safari tours through their dramatic canyon landscapes.

Located within the Narman district of Erzurum, the formations date back roughly 300 million years and span a vast terrain composed of 12 separate canyons. Their striking resemblance to the Grand Canyon has helped position the site as an emerging destination on Türkiye’s alternative tourism map.

Stretching across a 62-kilometer valley system and supported by state-backed tourism initiatives, the area offers visitors the chance to explore its rugged topography in an immersive way. Guided horseback safaris allow travelers to observe the region’s geological structure up close while passing through vividly colored red valleys, creating ideal conditions for photography.

Maintaining much of its natural integrity, the Narman Fairy Chimneys continue to draw adventure seekers and nature lovers looking for a distinctive outdoor experience.

Furkan Topuz, who organizes horseback safaris in the region, said the area becomes particularly busy on weekends. He noted that guides accompany beginners and children, helping them learn to ride safely.

“We teach riding to those who have never been on a horse before, always guiding them closely,” Topuz said, adding that while the commonly visited section covers around 50 hectares, the broader landscape is far larger and suitable for camping, especially in summer.

Topuz also highlighted growing international interest in the site, saying visitors from countries such as Japan, the United States and Canada arrive with caravans and often stay for around 10 days during the summer months.

“Sometimes I take my horse and traditional teapot and head into the mountains to relax. Riding offers a completely different feeling — it’s mentally soothing,” he said.

Another safari operator, Muhammet Akpınar, said they regularly organize tours in the area and described both the landscape and horseback riding experience as highly enjoyable.

Visitor Ayşe Kurt said it was her first time riding a horse and visiting the fairy chimneys.

“It was a wonderful experience. I had long been curious about this place but had never seen it before. The natural beauty is impressive, and exploring it on horseback feels entirely different,” she said.
