Hatay leads in geographical indication registrations in 2025
ANKARA
The Turkish Patent and Trademark Office (TÜRKPATENT) registered 125 new geographical indications in 2025, bringing the total number of certified products to 1,819 as of February 2026.
Another 841 applications are still under review.
Applications for geographical indications surged last year, rising 21 percent compared to 2024, with a total of 521 submissions. Antalya led the way with 182 applications, followed by Afyonkarahisar with 22 and Gaziantep with 19.
Hatay emerged as the province with the highest number of newly registered products, securing certification for 17 items. Konya followed with 11, while Çorum obtained six registrations. The certified products included not only food items but also textiles, handicrafts and natural goods.
Türkiye also accelerated efforts to protect its geographical indications internationally. In line with the Local Development Initiative, 15 Turkish products were registered with the European Union in 2025, marking the highest annual figure to date.
Between 2013 and 2023, Türkiye had secured EU certification for just eight products. That number rose to 10 in 2023, 11 in 2024, and reached a record 15 in 2025, underscoring the country’s growing success in promoting its local specialties abroad.
