Hamas says Israel launched air strike on Gaza, first since truce

GAZA - Reuters

Palestinian fishermen push their boat at the seaport of Gaza City March 22, 2013. Israel launched an airstrike on the Palestinian Gaza Strip on April 2, Hamas said.

Israel launched an airstrike on the Palestinian Gaza Strip on April 2, the first such attack since a truce ended an eight-day cross-border war in November, Hamas, the Islamist movement that controls the territory, said.

"Occupation planes bombarded an open area in northern Gaza, there were no wounded," a statement from the Hamas Interior Ministry said. An Israeli military spokeswoman had no immediate comment and said she was checking the report.

The strike near the northern Gaza town of Beit Lahiya came after militants in the Gaza Strip fired two mortar shells at the western Negev earlier on April 2, daily Haaretz reported.
