Şenol Güneş has stepped down as Trabzonspor coach in the wake of a heavy 3-1 defeat to Sanica Boru Elazığspor in the Spor Toto Super League on Jan. 27.

Güneş made the announcement during the press conference after the defeat.

“I am the only one responsible for the failure,” the veteran coach said. “I am ashamed to say that.”

The defeat to relegation-battling Elazığspor, who is 16th with 20 points, was the final straw in a string of poor results for Trabzonspor, who has 24 points and is in the 11th spot, now just four points above the relegation zone.

Güneş was at the helm during Trabzonspor’s two runner-up finishes in 1996 and 2011 and has also led Turkey to the bronze-medal finish in the 2002 World Cup as head coach.

Trabzonspor will be coached by Ünal Karaman, a former midfielder of the club, and the assistant coach to Güneş until the end of the season.
