A group of protesters read a press statement near the Rize Governor’s office against the decision to resume the construction of a road project in the Black Sea region.

The group named Fırtına Initiative protested the construction of the “Green Road,” a controversial 2,600-kilometer road project to connect highland areas in eight provinces in northern Turkey.

Heva Reyhan, who read a press statement on behalf of the initiative, said the road will pass through natural areas, thereby destroying them. The Fırtına Valley has been protected carefully up to today, she added.

The road construction resumed after a 42-day halt despite vociferous opposition from locals and environmental advocates, as well as the lack of an official permit and an ongoing case against the project.
