Gerets to replace Arveladze as the new Kayserispor coach

ISTANBUL

Belgium’s Eric Gerets has coached Galatasaray for two years from 2005 to 2007.

Kayserispor is close to announcing Belgium’s Eric Gerets as the new head coach after sacking Shota Arveladze.

Georgian coach Arveladze resigned from his post at the Central Anatolian club on Oct. 1, a day after Kayserispor suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat at Gençlerbirliği.

The Turkish media reported that Kayserispor would not waste much time and would announce Gerets as its next coach this week.

Kayserispor is sitting on the 17th spot of the 18-team Spor Toto Super League with four points in six matches. The Belgian coach spent two years in the Super League, leading a cash-strapped Galatasaray to a memorable championship in the 2005-2006 campaign.

The former Belgian international defender then moved to France’s Marseille and Saudi Arabia’s Al Hilal before taking the Moroccan national football team job. Shota Arveladze became the second coaching casualty at the Spor Toto Super League this season, after Kasımpaşa’s sacking of Metin Diyadin.

Former Ajax, Rangers and Trabzonspor forward Arveladze was having his first head coaching experience at Kayserispor since 2010.
