Gen Tolon arrested in Istanbul

An Istanbul court arrested Gen. Hurşit Tolon in the ongoing Ergenekon coup plot case yesterday. 

Specially authorized prosecutor Mehmet Ali Pekgüzel requested the arrest of Tolon on “serious suspicions of a criminal act.” 

Tolon objected to the request, saying he attended all court hearings despite not being under arrest and showed no signs of attempting to flee. 

The court ordered Tolon’s arrest after a recess. 

Tolon was arrested in July 2008 on charges of “leading a terrorist organization” and “attempting a coup” but was released pending trial in February 2009 due to ailing health.

Ergenekon is an alleged ultranationalist gang accused of plotting to overthrow the government by breeding chaos in society. k HDN
