Galatasaray narrowly beat Gençlerbirliği in the Turkish Spor Toto Super League match-up on May 16, as Dutch star midfielder Wesley Sneijder scored a vital goal on the road to the domestic title, with two games to spare.

The Lions’ ace in offense, Sneijder, found the net in the penalty area in the 67th minute, with a rare inside-foot shot after an assist by striker Burak Yılmaz.

After the goal, Galatasaray preferred a defensive playing style for securing the win on their home turf, Türk Telekom Arena.

Meanwhile, Galatasaray central midfielders Selçuk İnan and Hamit Altıntop were subbed out because of injuries. The game also marked Sneijder’s 100th show-up for Galatasaray.

Istanbul heavyweight Galatasaray has not conceded any goals in the last five league matches.

The Lions have won crucial three points before the derby against Beşiktaş, scheduled for May 24 at the Turk Telekom Arena.

Leader Galatasaray has raised its points to 73, as Fenerbahçe and Besiktaş follow closely behind.
