Father Andrea Santoro, who was killed in an armed attack on Feb. 5, 2006, in the Black Sea province of Trabzon, was remembered today with a ceremony held in his honor at the church where he was murdered.

The ceremony was attended by Santoro's sister, Maddalena Santoro, and was presided over by clerics from the Aegean province of İzmir and Rome.

Prayers were made and hymns were sung for Santoro after a candle was lit, while white carnations were placed at the location where he fell.

Speaking during the ceremony, Italian cleric Massimiliano Palinuro said Santoro's only purpose was to "humbly and silently" attest to the existence of Jesus Christ in these lands through a life devoted to love.
