Erdoğan visits Demirören family to extend condolences

ISTANBUL

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on June 10 visited the Demirören family to extend his condolences over the death of Erdoğan Demirören, the late chair of Demirören Holding, which owns the Demirören Media Group, including daily Hürriyet.

Demirören, the chairman of Demirören Holding, which owns the Demirören Media Group including daily Hürriyet, passed away on June 8 at the age of 80.

He had been receiving treatment at Istanbul’s Florence Nightingale Hospital’s intensive care unit since May 31.

Erdoğan issued a statement on June 8 over the death of Demirören.

“Erdoğan Demirören, a precious industrialist and businessman who has made great contributions to our country, will always be remembered,” he said in the statement.

On June 10, the president met with the late Erdoğan Demirören’s daughter Meltem Demirören Oktay, and his sons Yıldırım Demirören and Tayfun Demirören at the Demirören family’s mansion in Istanbul’s Kanlıca district.

Transport Minister Ahmet Arslan also visited the Demirören family to extend his condolences.

The businessman was laid to rest in Istanbul on June 10 with a ceremony attended by thousands of people and the country’s top politicians, including Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım, parliamentary speaker İsmail Kahraman, Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu, Energy Minister Berat Albayrak, Youth and Sports Minister Osman Aşkın Bak, Environment and Urban Planning Minister Mehmet Özhaseki, Family and Social Policies Minister Fatma Betül Sayan Kaya, and Culture and Tourism Minister Numan Kurtulmuş.

Prominent figures from the sports and business communities were also present at the ceremony.
