District governor suspended after coup attempt commits suicide in Turkey’s west

MANİSA – Anadolu Agency
A district governor, who had been suspended from duty as a part of the investigation into the July 15 coup attempt, committed suicide late on July 19 in the Aegean province of Manisa.

Ahmetli District Governor Necmi Akman reportedly used the gun of his bodyguard police officer to fire a single shot at his head in his home residence.

He was immediately taken to the Ahmetli State Hospital and was later transferred to the nearby Turgutlu State Hospital, where he subsequently succumbed to his injuries.

Akman was suspended from his duty along with two other district governors on July 18, three days after the failed coup attempt in Turkey, as a part of the investigation into what the government calls the “Fetullahist Terror Organization (FETÖ).” He had been in office for two years.

Akman’s bodyguard police officer was also detained after the incident.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
