Davutoğlu and Elaraby criticize UN Security Council on Syria

Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu has criticized the decision-making process within the structure of the United Nations in comments that were echoed by Arab League Secretary General Nabil Elaraby, who also chided the U.N. Security Council for not taking any action on the Syrian issue."The bloodshed and devastation of [Syria] is taking place before our eyes. This situation is a threat against international peace and security. The security council should intervene,” Elaraby said in a speech to the Istanbul World Forum today.
Davutoğlu said Turkey was taking sides with the people of Hama, Homs and Aleppo,
"who are doing all the effort for their dignity."
"Turkey is against [Syrian leader Bashar] al-Assad not because of his
religious sect, but because of his policy of oppression. Turkey will be on the
side of justice throughout history forever,” Davutoğlu said.
"For us, there is no difference between a Muslim and Christian in Syria;
there is no difference between a Sunni, an Alevi or a Nusayri. All
Syrians are the same for us and they are all our brothers,” he said.
Davutoğlu also repeated the words of Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip
Erdoğan, who earlier told the forum that there should be a new decision-making
process within the structure of the U.N.
"There should be a proper decision-making process so that the voices of
different nations can be heard within the international system. It is a must to
have reforms in the U.N. system,” he added.
Elaraby also criticized the U.N. Security Council and the international community
for not taking any action on the Syrian issue.
"We need a real change in the functioning of the U.N. Security Council.
Why would a permanent member veto a resolution calling for the delivery of
humanitarian assistance? The veto power is abused in the U.N. system,” he said.
"I am proud of Turkey because of what it is doing in Syria,” said the
former prime minister of Bosnia and Herzegovina, Haris Silajdzic. “Turkey does
this in the name of humanity, for all of us. We Bosnians know what it means
when hundreds of people are killed and suffer every day."
