The Republican People’s Party (CHP) has specified its communication guidelines ahead of the Nov. 1 general election, asking members to “avoid all statements that intimidate ethnic or religious minorities.”

It also requested that party members avoid placing placards and posters at historic, cultural or religious buildings for propaganda purposes.

Sharing the “Election Communication Principles” with all CHP bureaus across Turkey, the party’s central HQ outlined guidance to be followed throughout the pre-election period by all local branches, state-run Anadolu Agency reported on Oct. 8.

The CHP asked its officials to convey “messages of unity and solidarity” in campaigning, keeping in mind that the country is currently going through hard times amid renewed clashes between the security forces and the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) as well as violence across the border in Syria.

The party asked its officials to use all means to “present a consolidated action plan on Turkey’s problems and communicate consistent, accurate and realistic election promises to the public.”

Describing how rallies should be held ahead of the election, the CHP said no speaker should deliver speeches for
longer than 20 minutes, which it said was the ideal duration for campaign speeches.
