Istanbul’s Teşvikiye Mosque has hosted Burhan Doğançay ceremony

A ceremony was held at Istanbul’s Teşvikye Mosque yesterday for Turkey’s most famous painter, Burhan Doğançay, who died on Jan. 16 at the age of 84.

Speaking at the ceremony, Culture and Tourism Minister Ertuğrul Günay said he knew Doğançay well and that he was a famed artist everyone is proud of and represented Turkey in various artistic fields over the years.

“A few months ago, I saw an event about his painting ‘Blue Symphony’ and looked closely at the technique of the painting. I deeply felt its richness that one cannot see from a distance,” Günay said.

After the prayer ceremony, Doğançay’s body was sent to Bodrum upon his wish. He will be buried on Jan. 19 in Bodrum Turgutreis Karabağ cemetery. Doğançay’s wife Angela Doğançay and sisters Ayten Doğançay and Tülin Sina Özbudak were present at the ceremony, as well as the European Union Chief Negotiator Egemen Bağış, IKSV Board President Bülent Eczacıbaşı.
