A 30-year-old man stole money and several valuable belongings last November from Çankaya Palace in Ankara, the home of the Turkish president, according to a report published by daily Hürriyet.

The man, identified as Sertif Y. by security forces, allegedly jumped over the wall and entered through the window of a security guard's lodging located in the palace's garden.

Sertif Y. was subsequently detained in an emergency operation.

"I presumed that it was a rich house, I didn't know that it was the presidential palace," he said in testimony to the National Intelligence Organization (MİT), as well as police terrorism experts.

Police records revealed that he had previously been convicted of different crimes.

The palace is protected with high-security systems by a special security team.
