The Turkish General Staff has filed a legal complaint against Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) Co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş over recent remarks deriding Chief of General Staff Gen. Necdet Özel.

“A legal process has been initiated against a political leader over the comments he made toward the chief of General Staff,” the General Staff said in a statement yesterday.

Demirtaş had said, “It doesn’t matter if your rank is general, you are a non-commissioned officer to us.” The BDP leader’s comments came after Özel stated in an interview that Kurdish-language education should not be allowed in Turkey on grounds such freedoms would endanger the country’s unity.
