ISTANBUL
The Soma mining disaster, which has claimed the lives of at least 282 workers, has caused huge sorrow both inside and outside the country, as messages of condolences across the world come in for families of the victims.

In Azerbaijan, Deputy Prime Minister Abid Şerifov had difficultly holding back his tears during an event in Baku with Turkish businessmen and diplomats.

“I extend my condolences to the families of the victims. May God give patience to them all. Our people’s joy and sorrow are common,” Şerifov said.

A video from Azeri broadcaster Hazar TV showed how Şerifov drank a sip of water to avoid crying at the beginning of his speech.
