Airport in southeastern district closed for three months

Selahaddin Eyyubi Airport, which was opened in the southeastern province of Hakkari’s Yüksekova district in May, has been closed for around three months due to “terror attacks.”

The airport, launched in a ceremony on May 6 with the participation of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, will not be permitted to operate for around three months. 

The construction of the Hakkari Yüksekova Airport started five years ago in a region where a decades-long armed conflict has taken place between the Turkish military and the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The construction cost totaled around 102 million Turkish Liras.

Turkish Airlines commenced flights to the much-anticipated new airport in Yüksekova on May 26.

Yüksekova Trade and Industry Chamber head Salih Özdemir said around 23,000 passengers have used the airline during its two months of operation.
