7 security officers, two civil servants killed in one day during PKK attacks

Seven members of security officials, including a captain, as well as two civil servants were killed in attacks by the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) in Turkey’s southeastern districts on Feb. 9. 

Two soldiers and one police officer were killed and one soldier and one policeman were injured in attacks in southeastern provinces of Diyarbakır and Şırnak. 

The latest attack occurred after security forces spotted around 10 PKK militants attempting to infiltrate Turkish territory at 6:30 p.m.

Two soldiers were wounded, one severely, as clashes erupted between security forces from the Cizre/Yüzsüren border patrol and the infiltrating militants. 

The Turkish Armed Forces released a statement on Feb. 10 about the attack, announcing that one of the soldiers was killed.


Soldier dies in hospital

“The wounded soldiers were transferred to a hospital, but despite all efforts our heavily wounded comrade-in-arms could not be saved,” the statement said, adding that the soldier succumbed to his wounds at 9:30 p.m.

The identity of the soldier was not disclosed. Another soldier was killed in clashes that erupted during an operation against PKK militants in Diyarbakır’s Sur district. 

The soldier, identified by Turkey’s state-run Anadolu Agency as gendarmerie captain Fatih Yaşar, succumbed to his wounds at Diyarbakır Military Hospital at 11:45 p.m., according to another official statement by the Armed Forces. Meanwhile, an armored police vehicle on patrol duty was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade at 10.10 p.m. in Şırnak’s Cumhuriyet Square on Feb. 9.

One officer, identified as Mehmet Güngördü, was killed at the site while a wounded policeman was taken to Şırnak State Hospital for treatment.  

In addition to the casualties in Cizre and Sur, six security officers were killed earlier on Feb. 9. One police officer and one soldier succumbed to their injuries sustained eight days ago in attacks by the PKK in Şırnak and Diyarbakır.

The police officer, 24-year-old Tayfun Yüce, was wounded on Feb. 1 as PKK militants detonated an improvised explosive device during the passing of an armored police vehicle in the Ataken neighborhood of Şırnak’s İdil district. Yüce was taken to the Gülhane Military Medical Academy (GATA) in Istanbul for treatment but he died early on Feb. 9. His funeral will take place in his home Ceyhan district in the southern province of Adana.

Meanwhile, a soldier and a policeman were killed during operations conducted against PKK militants in Cizre.

The security officials were identified as special operations police Osman Yurt and private soldier Vedat Dolançay. 

Finally, two public servants were killed and another was wounded in a car bomb explosion in Şırnak province.

The civil servants, identified as, Diyar Oslu and Ahmet Arttı, were killed in the powerful explosion that destroyed the vehicle while Abdülkerim Oslu suffered severe injuries and was promptly transferred to Şırnak State Hospital.
