After comparing eight separate lists from various institutions, Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ) Professor Ural Akbulut discovered that 10 Turkish universities ranked among the world’s top 500 colleges in 2012.

According to Akbulut, ODTÜ, Istanbul University, Hacettepe University, Ankara University, Ege University, Bilkent, Gazi University, Boğaziçi University, Koç University and Istanbul Technical University (İTÜ) were listed among the 500 best universities in the world this year by eight different institutions who ranked schools the world over.

"It was tough to figure out Turkish universities' place in the world ordering. Because there were differences between criteria, the total number of universities and the revealing time of these lists by institutions," Akbulut has said, adding that one should avoid thinking of these lists as the only factor when evaluating a university.

It is believed that Turkish universities have risen to higher ranks compared to previous years.
