Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu criticized the Israeli raid in Syria this week, severely questioning Damascus' inaction on the aggression. "Why didn't [Bashar] al-Assad even throw a pebble when Israeli jets were flying over his palace and playing with the dignity of his country?" Davutoğlu told reporters on his way to Serbian capital Belgrade for a bilateral visit, daily Hürriyet has reported.

"Why didn't the Syrian Army, which has been attacking its own innocent people for 22 months now from the air with jets and by land with tanks and artillery fire, respond to Israel's operation? Why can't al-Assad, who gave order to fire SCUD missiles at Aleppo, do anything against Israel?" Davutoğlu said.
Davutoğlu said they did not know the precise circumstances of the raid but added that Turkey would not stay unresponsive to an Israeli attack against any Muslim country.

Davutoğlu also accused Syria's embattled leader of having made a secret deal with Israel. "Is there a secret agreement between al-Assad and Israel? Wasn't the Syrian army founded to protect its country and its people against this sort of aggression? The al-Assad regime only abuses. Why don't you use the same power that you use against defenseless women against Israel, which you have seen as an enemy since its foundation," he said.

Syria accused Israel of attacking a military site outside of the capital and a weapons convoy near the Lebanese border on Jan. 30.

Over the past months, there had been much speculation surrounding the crash of Turkish F-4 jet on June 22 near the Syrian coast. Turkey has long said it was struck by Syria in international waters, while Damascus has claimed that it was hit with anti-aircraft fire close to the Arab republic’s coast.

Keep your friends close enemies closer they say. AKP has a good point here about why Syria did not respond to Israel. By the way, without USA there will be no Israel, thats their fuel, emmo and everything else that keeps them alive.

TEKION PARTICLE If you deal with the mustache then you also have the issue of the chest hair, BUT I bet he never is naked in public, so? Sometimes you have to laugh or you will cry. This whole situation is very sad.

@mesude salihli - I'm not Israeli but I'm pretty sure Perez is just a figurehead that does not speak for Israel. Israel has never had US military help. It has always stood on it's own. The US has helped with arms but that was to counterbalance the massive arming of it's enemies by the russians.

Syria, Egypt, Jordan are weak enemies. Turkey did not respond to Syria for downing of its fighter jet for the same reason S. Korea did not respond to N. Korea's attacks. Turkey (S. Korea) has a lot to loose, Syria (N. Korea) has nothing to loose. Israel is a militarized nation, which is constantly in war, it is like a school bully, you just want to stay away regardless of your size. Perez even admitted that Israel could not survive without the help of the US. That explains everything.

Some people love to live on their knees. Even after the American civil war many slaves did not want to be free, they were afraid of looking after themselves. Even after the AKP raised Turkey of its knees and has given it the ability to stand as an equal in the world, some People still hark back to the days when they looked to Afendi to tell them what to think.

@greg gomes, didn't mention anything other then that no response other then cutting of ties with Israel, of course there would be no military response, because they aren't capable of doing anything against the IDF of any consequence. @mesude salihli, even with all the arabs acting together, they couldn't keep Israel down, that's because they are too busy surpressing and killing theiir own people, always have, always will.

Mesude, what's a stronger enemy? I guess the combined forces of Syria, Egypt, Jordan as well as contributions from various other Arab countries is not by your standards strong enough. It just makes me think how your Turkish army is perceived if after having one of your fighter jets downed by Syria it is not responded to even with a throw of a pebble. I guess it's because you believe responding to a weakling like Syria is not even worth while the effort.
