Two police officers were killed on May 10 while trying to dispose of an explosive placed on a street by outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) militants in the İpekyolu district of the southeastern province of Van.

Police had been in the district upon a notice that PKK militants planted a hand-made explosive on Karlıova Street in the Hacıbekir neighborhood.

The bomb exploded as two bomb disposal experts, Ferhan Arslan and Ahmet Çam, were trying to defuse it.

Arslan and Çam were killed in the blast while one police officer was injured.

Following the explosion, an air-supported operation was started to apprehend PKK militants in the region.
