A number of Iranian websites have lashed out at football fans from the country’s northwest, calling them “separatists” for wearing T-shirts displaying Turkish and Azeri symbols.

According to a report by BB Turkish News, some fans wore T-shirts emblazoned with Turkish and Azerbaijani flags during an Iranian league match between Tabriz team Tractor Sazi and Fajr Sepasi of Shiraz.

BBC Turkish News quoted the pro-government website “Rajanews” as saying that Azeri football fans attended the game with “separatist symbols in attempt to spread Pan-Turkist ideas through the use of divisive slogans.
