Police officer Ahmet Toprakoğlu, 28, died in hospital today after sustaining gunshot injuries during yesterday’s Nevruz clashes in the southeastern province of Şırnak.

Demonstrators had gathered in Şırnak's Cizre district to celebrate Nevruz, but clashes erupted after police refused to allow the celebrations.

Armed people who blended in with the demonstrators opened fire on police officers with long-range weapons. Policemen Toprakoğlu and Cihangir Ata were shot and heavily injured.

Toprakoğlu was promptly flown to Dicle University Medical School in Diyarbakır for treatment but succumbed to his injuries this morning.
