Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan told Denmark’s Politiken newspaper that he still stood behind the speech he gave several weeks ago in which he called Zionism a crime against humanity while clarifying that his criticism targeted Israeli policies.

“I know that what I said in Vienna caused debates,” Erdoğan told the daily. “But no one should misunderstand me. Everyone knows that my criticism is of Israeli policies. And our criticisms will continue as long as Israel does not accept the existence of the Palestinian state.”

Erdoğan said he was expressing his clear stance on the issue.

“I put forth my stance clearly on the issue,” he said. “That is why I stand behind the speech I gave in Vienna.”

Erdoğan called Zionism a “crime against humanity” in a United Nations conference in Vienna, saying, “Just as with Zionism, anti-Semitism and fascism, it has become necessary to view Islamophobia as a crime against humanity.

The speech prompted reactions from several international actors, including U.S. Congress members and senators who penned a letter calling on him to retract his remarks.

Turkish PM's remarks on Zionism sparks controversy

“Just like Zionism, anti-Semitism and fascism, it becomes unavoidable that Islamophobia must be regarded as a crime against humanity,” Erdoğan said last month speaking at a United Nations conference in Vienna.

After Erdoğan's remarks, US Secretary of State John Kerry has said he found "objectionable" the Turkish prime minister's branding of Zionism as a crime against humanity.

The U.S. Congress members and senators penned a letter directed at Erdoğan, calling on him to retract his remarks.

Erdogan wants Arab oil and gas money, not anymore impoverished Europe. His words against Israel are pure PR. Bashar al Assad and Israel were his friends, now there are his enemies. He follows the Arab current while trying to keep a good relation with the USA and Europe. A difficult game that he may lose.

Misguided arrogance is not courage. It is a manifestation of ignorance.

@Mehmet Kemal. You wrote, "Erdogan stand your ground." Unfortunately for Turkey, he is standing his ground... And that is being illinformed and misinformed. @Jobs jon. Could you please translate your submission for the benefit of those who speak English? Regards

I am normally a stark critic of RTE but on this occasion way to go sir. Do not budge and stand by your statement. What you said is the truth. Why should you apologize to Israel when Israel refused to apologize for her murderous rampage against the pro Palestinian activists on Mavi Marmara. Hats off to you.

@mara mcglothin, Thank you for reading (as I have noted your previous responses also). I feel most posts here are fueled by a dislike/disapproval of Israel and/or its actions and a lack of understanding of what Zionism actually means. Just like people commit wrong doing in the name of Islam, it is perfectly plausible that some Jews commit wrong doing in the name of Zionism. Zionism is not anti any religion, and RTE compares it anti-semetism and islamaphobia ???

The courage of Erdogan has to be admired. For far to long leaders of other Countries have been scared to condem Israil in there treatment of the Palastinians. Erdogan stand your ground,.

RTE, What a leader, tells the truth and only the truth. Zionism has done evil since it was formed, it has never done good. It creates artificial tensions between Muslims and Christians and kills people but blames others and keeps stealing at gunpoint. It is for those reasons it is a crime committed by few extremists in the name of the Jews. The Jews need to understand it and should distance from the Zionists.

I can blame Israelis only for one thing for not deporting all Palestinian Arabs to other Arab lands like Arabs did to 1 million of Jews with 1 suitcase. If Palestine were in Jordanian hands today nobody would even notice the any problem.

I think this conversation is more harmful to Israel than it is to Erdogan.

"And our criticisms will continue as long as Israel does not accept the existence of the Palestinian state.” Once again Mr. Erdogan appears misinformed on the international stage as it is Hamas and their Palestinian supporters who do not accept the existence of an Isreali state and not the other way around. Hamas' charter, which is readily available on the Web for those who are not familiar with it, serves as a concrete testament of the latter. Regards
