Turkish man pickles dollars in reaction to US currency
A numismatist in Turkey’s southeast has said he has pickled his dollars in protest to citizens who have not converted their United States currency to Turkish Liras. Click through for the story in photos...
Local media reported on Sept. 26 that Esat Kaplan staged the odd protest at the numismatics museum that he heads in the Gaziantep province. Posing between glasses full of pickle water and U.S. dollars, Kaplan rebuked against all Turks who have failed to convert their foreign currency into liras so far.
“What are you waiting for? Are you going to make pickles out of those dollars?” Kaplan said. “The dollar should not be the currency of the world. As the Turkish nation, God willing, we will succeed. Now go and convert your dollars,” he added.
The lira significantly lost value against the greenback this year amid a diplomatic standoff between Turkey and the Trump administration. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had described the depreciation as “an economic assassination attempt” while calling his citizens to convert their dollars into liras while boycotting U.S.-made electronic goods.
