Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu will travel to Iran on Dec. 17 to hold talks with his Iranian counterpart Mohammed Javad Zareef, the ministry has announced in a written statement.

The visit will take place upon the invitation of Zareef, read the statement. “Bilateral relations as well as actual regional and international developments will be discussed during the visit,” it added.

Turkey and Iran find themselves on opposite pages in the four-year-long Syrian civil war, with the latter one of staunchest supporters of the Damascus regime along with Russia. The two countries also differ on a number of regional issues and both accuse each other of pursuing sectarian policies in the Middle East.
