Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu had dinner with the grandsons of Ottoman Sultan Abdülmecid – Osman Selahaddin, Mehmed Ziyaeddin and Ömer Abdülmecid Osmanoğlu – in Turkey’s London Embassy yesterday.

Highlighting the special and historic character of the meeting, Davutoğlu said he was very happy to meet with the Osmanoğlu family and voiced hopes that he will gather with them more frequently.

Davutoğlu invited the family to the Şeb-i Aruz Ceremonies honoring the anniversary of the death of Mevlana Jalal al-Din Rumi, which take place every December in the central Anatolian city of Konya.

Osman Selahaddin Osmanoğlu said they were pleased by the foreign minister’s gesture and would meet with him in Istanbul or Bursa, in addition to Konya.

Grandsons of Abdul Mecid died 1861? I doubt it. Grandsons of Abdulmecit II -- went into exile i 1924. More likely but he was never sultan, just caliph. You would think journos would get it right.

@Turk Uzan, I suspect there is at least one person hoping for a more active non-Osmanli sultanate. Joking aside, it is time that monarchies the world over were put to rest. This is the 21st century not the 15th. It is time to stop these lifetime elitist power props.

I wouldn't mind a show monarchy like in many European countries .. why not, they are after all a part of our history. this is a good thing. Not to mention they are liberal, modern people who have no intentions of getting on the throne etc. It's sad to see their situation, I would love for them to return as citizens or as a show monarchy. They are a part of us. People need to learn to hate AKP for what they deserve to be hated for, not deny something good because they dislike AKP
