Turkish flags planted on Şemdinli mountains

Several Turkish flags have been placed on mountains around the eastern province of Hakkari’s Şemdinli district following suggestions that the outlawed Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) had taken control of the area, Doğan news agency reported.
 
Pro-Kurdish Peace and Democracy Party (BDP) deputy Selahattin Demirtaş had caused a strong reaction recently when he claimed that 400 square kilometers in Şemdinli had fallen to the PKK.
 
Turkish authorities have denied such claims. The planting of flags on Goman Mountain, visible from every angle, followed the debate.
 
Two thousand solders have been conducting operations in the area with the aid of air support amid long-running battles between the PKK and the army that began on July 23.
