ENERGY > Turkish firm gets Israeli loan for power production

ISTANBUL - Hürriyet Daily News

Despite strained relations between Turkey and Israel following the flotilla incident in May 2010, Turkish and Israeli business ventures continue full steam ahead as witnessed by Zorlu Enerji’s $277 mln natural gas investments in Israel

Zorlu Holding Chairman Ahmet Zorlu (second L) poses with Israeli Energy Minister Uzi Landau (third L) at the natural gas project financing signing ceremony in Israel.

Zorlu Holding Chairman Ahmet Zorlu (second L) poses with Israeli Energy Minister Uzi Landau (third L) at the natural gas project financing signing ceremony in Israel.

The Ashdod and Ramat natural gas facilities in Israel have been granted a loan of more tharn 1.1 billion Israeli Shekels ($277 million) by Israeli lenders, according to a Zorlu press release. Zorlu Enerji holds a 42.15 percent stake in the natural gas facilities and the remaining 57.85 percent stake is owned by Edeltech Ltd.

Zolru Enerji received 355 million shekels ($88 million) for its Ashdod natural gas facility and 766 million shekels ($189 million) for its Ramat Negev natural gas facility from Bank Leumi le-Israel and other lenders.

The parties signed the deals for the two facilities attended by Israeli Energy Minister Uzi Landau.
The chairman of Zorlu Holding, Ahmet Zorlu, who was also present at the ceremony in Israel, said Zorlu Enerji was continuing to invest in critical domestic and international ventures in the energy sector and was developing projects to make the company a regional power.

“We believe that our investments in Israel are important steps in this direction. With this project we were able to secure financing for Israel’s first private sector-spearheaded cogeneration project. As Zorlu Holding we have invested more than $1 billion in Israel,” Zorlu said. He added that Ashdod and Ramad Negev would become operational within two years and that with the addition of the Dorad and Solad plants they would achieve 975 MW of power.

Israel’s energy consumption last year was around 46,000 MW.

The Ashdod and Ramat Neveg plants are being built to provide electric and steam power to energy-hungary Israel’s industrial facilities, according to Zorlu. The plants are located close to the region’s most important chemical zones, Makhteshim and Agan.

The Ashdod plant, once it becomes operational, will be able to provide 55 MW of electricity and 40 tons/hour of steam power. The Ramat Neveg plant will also have the capacity to provide 120 MW of electric and 70 tons/hour of steam power. Both plans are slated to become operational in 2014.  Along with the Dorad and Solad plants, Zorlu Energy will produce 975 MW of total electricity in Israel.

Earlier this month Zorlu handed some of its share in both facilities to its Israeli partner, leaving its controlling position.

The ties between Turkey and Israel are tense since May 31, 2010, when Israeli commandos attacked a Turkish aid ship bound for Gaza, killing eight Turkish citizens and one American of Turkish descent. However, business ties have remained strong since then.

Still, Israel’s recent energy ties with Greek Cyprus also added to tensions. Israel and the Greek Cypriot government signed an underwater power transfer deal early in March. U.S.-based Noble Energy is searching for oil and gas off the Cypriot island, a move which triggered Turkey’s TPAO to start similar activities in and off Turkish Cyprus.

@ Koksuz kosmopoit I couldnt have agreed with you more about the Israeli FM liberman. If Lieberman was not here Israel and Turkey would have resolved they differances long time ago.Turkey has a important role in the future of Europe. With sanctions on Iranian exports of Gas and Oil,Turkey is a very important player when it comes to energy, without Turkey the EU is reliant on Russia,at the mercy of Russiia and Putin.Only alternative is Through Turkey,Israel needs Turkeys hub

The pointless attitude towards Israel has favored Turkey for a short while in the quest to assure economical and political influence in the middle east and further. But, events such as the Arab spring has proven that move to be short lived. People are smarter that politicians and have no hidden agendas, they act on the benefit of their own companies. This is why business flourish.

@dogan kemal ileri. Dogan Bey, Arabs and Jews already reside peacefully in a single country; it's called Israel, wherein Arabs, Circassians, Christians, Bedouins, Armenians, Alawi and Ethiopian Orthodox are extended full civil and legal rights as minorities. Unfortunately, the same has yet to be said for Jews or Christians resident in Arab countries. Israel neither requires nor expects Turkish sympathy. Realpolitik, economic ties and geo-political commonalities will dictate polity behaviour.

@dogan. There are 22 Arab countries, in none of which do Arabs live peacefully even with each other. Why would Israel's Jewish community want to bring such a fate on itself? Israel is a Jewish state as a matter of law - San Remo Convention, League of Nations Palestine Mandate, U.N. Charter Article 80. Israel and Turkey share an interest in stable, productive, trading society. When PM Erdogan gets over his neo-Ottoman ambitions, Israel and Turkey can reconcile.

@ileri Have you not seen what happens to non-Muslems in Arab countries, look at Egypt where Christians have been murdered and others forced to convert to Islam, same for Lebanon where half the Christian population has left the country over the last twenty years. Need I mention the 750,000 Jews that had to flee Iraq, Iran, Egypt, Syria, Tunisia, etc. Don't hold your breath for the Jews to put themselves in the hands of Arab goodwill.

Israel needs Turkey more than Turkey needs Israel. My reason is simple. With the discovery of gas in the med,Israel needs to transit the gas to customers in Europe, one way for transit is through Turkeys hub.Thats why David cameron wants Turkish Israeli ties to be mended, which benifits israel and Turkey.

The Arabs and Jews must live peacefully in a single country called Palestine. There should be no country called Israel.Until this inevitable fact happens don't expect any sympathy from Turks or any other nation for that matter.@Murat has answered this article with distinction

Of course Israel and Turkey share common interests and business will, on some level, continue to be done. The problem is political and will not be solved while Erdoğan flirts with Arab anti-Zionists in his quest to be padishah, nor while Avigdor Lieberman is Israeli FM. (Loathesome as Netanyahu is, I suspect he'd have agreed to an acceptable compromise long ago if he did not need Lieberman's party to keep his government in office.)

Turkey can't force private investors not to invest in any other country, but it should be discouraged till the relations get to normal. Ahmet Zorlu should opt other countries with his next investment. I hope he will get the message from the Turkish people, not to act against the interest of Turkey, otherwise the Turkish people will let him pay a big price. Just how the international community discourages investing in Iran, we should do same for Israel! Same done by Israel about tourism to Turkey
