Turkish Film Days begin in New York

New York’s Turkish Film Days will take place April 27 through May 10. The event will be organized by the American Turkish Society and the Moon & Stars Project, and will be titled “The Space Between: A Panorama of Cinema in Turkey.”It will be the most comprehensive Turkish cinema retrospective ever held in the U.S. A total of 29 movies, including several award winners and dating from the 1950s to today, will be screened within the scope of the festival. Turkish director Raşit Çelikezer’s film “Can,” which was the first Turkish movie to be included in the Sundance Film Festival, will be shown at the opening ceremony.
Turkey’s rich cinema tradition is now known to many American film buffs, Lincoln Center Film Society Program Director Richard Pena said in a statement about the festival program. Twenty-nine of the films included in the program were chosen for having been made under very hard conditions and being focused on social issues, he said.
The festival’s film screenings will be followed by discussions with directors.
The event will end on May 10 with a screening of Özcan Alper’s “Gelecek Uzun Sürer” (The Future Lasts Forever).
New York Turkish Film Days is sponsored by Chobani and its Shepherd’s Gift Foundation. It is also supported by Ramerica International, affiliated with the Koç Group, and The Marmara Manhattan.
