Turkish Cypriot President Mustafa Akıncı has expressed his solidarity with the arrested editor-in-chief of Turkish daily Cumhuriyet and its Ankara bureau chief.

“Democracy, human rights, freedom of thought and expression and the right to access information are musts in being human,” the president said on his Facebook page on Nov. 29.

“Above all, I am a human and I would like to express my solidarity with Can Dündar, Erdem Gül and … all journalists who have been deprived of their freedom,” Akıncı said.

Dündar and Gül were detained Nov. 26 on charges of espionage and assisting a terrorist organization in a news report on the alleged supply of arms to fighters in Syria by the Turkish intelligence service.
