Turkish Airlines to offer phone service on board

ANKARA - Anatolia News Agency
Turkish Airlines plans to offer cell phone and internet services to its passengers on 19 planes, starting with cell phone services onboard one of its 777 model airplanes by the end of this year.

The airline has begun tests on three of its aircrafts and will continue trials until May. The studies are being conducted in line with international aviation norms, and safety officials have said cell phone usage will only be allowed at high altitudes. When the plane dips below 1,800 meters (6,000 feet), the system will automatically be shut off, adding another layer of safety as passengers are currently lax about shutting off their cell phones in flight.

Other airlines interested in offering these services include Lufthansa, Emirates, Malaysian, Cathay Pacific and Virgin Atlantic.
