Turkish theater actress Nilgün Belgün staged her solo play “Aşk ve Komedi” (Love and Comedy) in the United States on March 17 as part of an event organized by the New York-based Turkish Women’s League of America (TWLA) to provide funding for its education work.

The play, based on her own book written five years ago, drew big interest from audiences. Belgün’s performance was full of life, memories, happiness and sorrow and was accompanied by songs.

“It makes me really happy for me to take the stage during my first visit to the U.S,” said Belgün. “I saw beautiful audiences. The theater was full. I also saw that I am loved and got an incredible reaction that made me very happy.”

TWLA Chair Sermin Özçilingir presented a plaque to Belgün for her contributions to their work. Özçilingir said the league was one of the oldest organizations straddling Turkish and American society. “We have the Atatürk School within our body. We organize events to provide income for our schools.”
Belgin later signed autographs and posed for fans.
