The Turkish pharmaceutical sector was worth $9.1 billion in terms of size in 2011 and is Europe’s seventh and the world’s sixteenth largest pharmaceutical industry.

Turkey’s “pharmaceutical industry” is the seventh biggest pharmaceutical market in Europe and the sixteenth largest in the world.

The demand for health services is on rise because of rapid population growth due to increasing global longevity, Güldem Berkman, chairman of the Association of Research-Based Pharmaceutical Companies, told Anatolia news agency yesterday.

Berkman stated that in the near future, countries with growing economies, including Turkey, would attract more attention. “The pharmaceutical industry in Turkey contains nearly 300 active firms, a strong substructure and the capacity to produce in addition to a qualified work force.”

“In 2011, our market was worth of $9.1 billion in terms of size, we are Europe’s seventh and the world’s sixteenth biggest pharmaceutical sector,” he said.

Furthermore, Berkman added that between 2005 and 2009, the sector grew 22 percent per box of medicine and 48 percent on the basis of value.
