Turkey has officially announced that one of its jets was shot down yesterday by Syria while vowing to take the necessary steps once the incident is fully clarified.

"In the light of the information gathered, it's been understood that our aircraft was shot down by Syria," said a government statement issue following a high-level security meeting late yesterday.

Search and rescue efforts to locate the plane’s two missing pilots are continuing, it said, adding that the efforts were being assisted by Syrian vessels.

"Turkey will take all necesary steps and will take its final position after the full [explanation] of the incident," the statement said.

A Turkish source had said yesterday that Syria expressed sorrow after the incident, in which a Turkish jet went down in Syrian territorial waters just before noon yesterday.

Meanwhile, US State Department spokesperson Victoria Nuland said “We’ve seen the reports you’ve seen. We have obviously been in contact with our Turkish ally. But with regard to the specifics of the case, I think we’re going to let the Turks speak to it rather than speak to it ourselves. I think we’ll let the Turks speak to it. To my knowledge, they haven’t raised this at NATO at this point.”

I love all the finger pointing to the U.S. insinuating the U.S. wants a war. You act like we have nothing better to do! Every conflict we have entered had legit reasons. Take the conflicts recently. Iraq and Afghanistan...you don’t want us there, maybe they should stop supporting and providing terrorists to kill our people. First Gulf war...had we not the entire world would have been blackmailed by Iraq. I could go on and on, this notion we are warmongers is ridiculous.

Davutoglu admitted that the plane entered briefly Syrian airspace. therefore Syria have the right the full right to shoot it down , Syria didn't do anything wrong mainly Turkey is supporting the Out Laws of Syria , even if they call them selves " The Free Army of Syria " they are traitors and Outlaws , Turkey Knows that is they flow any airplane over Syria is just a Challenge,,, why?

Article 5 doe 't apply, as Turkey was the provocater here, and violated Syrian airspace. No matter what the Turkish FM says. The proof lies in Syrian waters. Turkey got caught with it's hand in the cookie jar.

Erdogan must do what Mustafa Kemal would have done in this instance. He must reply with devastating military force. And he must do it now. NO MORE COUNTING TO TEN!

The problem is that Obama is NOT supporting the Turks. Obama must be voted out of office. If McCain were president, the whole US military would be there for Turkey. Get rid of Obama in the next election. All americans who want peace: DO NOT VOTE FOR OBAMA

Mark, maybe if Turkey had neighbors like Denmark or Switzerland there would be zero problems. Instead one of its neighbors has a brutal dictator in power slaughtering thousands of his own people, another neighbor won't compromise on the Cyprus issue, and another neighbor keeps accusing Turkey of genocide and threatened to take Eastern Anatolia back. If we took whatever country you live in and put it where Turkey is, I'm sure there wouldn't be zero problems.

Turkey has the absolute right to defend itself!...When Syrian warplanes enter international waters to shoot down a Turkish Warplane they should expect serious consequences...I suggest giving Assad a good "SLAP" for this!...I am an American Veteran who has always respected Turkey, though I wish they had better relations with Israel.

Turkey has problems with all its neighbors, the Greeks, the Armenian, the Bulgarians, the Iraqi's and now the Syrians. Its trying to act as a regional power but has the respect of non of its neighbors.

according to the article 5 , nato should intervene in syria. The article states that an attack on any of NATO member should be considered as an attack on the entire alliance.however usa wants turkey to take its own decison regarding the syria issue and leave turkey to itself.usa is trying to drag turkey into a war.turkey should be alert to all of the provocations.
