Turkey blocked North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) initiatives taken toward the inclusion of Israel in the organization, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said on Feb. 5 to the reporters during his flight to Budapest.

Erdoğan was speaking on the possibility of cultural differences as the cause of the European Union’s five-decade delay, when he said it was possible that the union was “hesitant because the members will not be able to do everything they want when Turkey gets in,” likening the situation to that of NATO.

“Are we not in NATO with these countries?” Erdoğan asked, recalling that Turkey is the only country in the pact with a Muslim population.

“We, as Turkey, would stop wrong steps [in NATO]. Thus, we saw such steps toward Israel’s inclusion in NATO. We prevented that,” Erdoğan said. “We have our own red lines. For us, to be involved in NATO with Israel is never considerable. To be with such a cruel understanding would conflict with our structure, history and culture.”

Rich Bind you ask "Just what is it that Turkey provides NATO". Truther rightly points out Turkey is a Muslim country. This stops NATO from being seen as a Christian club. Turkey is right next to oil-rich trouble spots of the ME and maintains political relationships with them. She is next to Russia, NATO's main rival and she controls the Bosphorus, which Russian fleet must use. No other NATO country can provide these. Israel's assets are easily covered by other members and she comes with baggage.

I think you forget that Turkiye is the only Muslim nation currently in NATO with the second biggest military after the U.S! Israel only have the largest fleet of F-16 fighters, provided by the U.S, but by no means the best air force in the region. Turkiye would stomp Israel if it came to any sort of armed conflict, and you know this. As for protecting their citizens... they only protect their own kind while committing the blatant and systematic destruction of Palestine. Sound about right?

Handing Israel NATO membership is like handing a toddler a loaded gun to play with in a room full of people.

Good one RIMON TREE! There is an awful lot that doesn't get reported in Turkey! And now that you mention it, Is anyone else curious what has been happening in the last three weeks during the Lighthouse trial. It was reported that they trial opened on January 17th and that is the last I have heard. Am I wrong? Was there any other news on the subject that I missed?

@Truther: I mean the hi tech weapons developed by Israelis in Israel (yes funded by US, in return for technology exchange) and currently being purchased by India, China, US and Russia, even South Sudan. Just what is it that Turkey provides NATO? Israel has the most advanced air force in the region and even its cyber warfare development is the envy of most nations (ask any Iranian if that is true). As to Israels true face, it protects its citizens with a real system of justice & courts.

Israel in NATO? That is a worse idea than Greece in EU! Why on Earth NATO would want to have all the liabilities of a member like Israel, an apertehind and theocratic state brings without anything in return? NATO is a club of democracies by the way. If so Western oriented and identified, why on Earth did all these peoiple move to the middle of the Middle East? To make the World a more miserable place?

@Rich Bind... You mean the hi-tech weapons funded and supplied by the good old U.S of Amerika! Turkey has a lot more to offer than Israel ever could! Besides, lately the whole world is seeing the true face of the Zionist regime running the state of Israel.

I agree with Asli Guven. I don't believe Israel's NATO membership is on the agenda. This would turn NATO into an enemy in the eyes of many Muslim countries overnight, and would mean NATO is taking sides in the Palestinian dispute. NATO operates in many Muslim countries and cannot afford the baggage Israel's membership will bring. @Rich Bind, where's your evidence that Turkey's EU membership is linked to Israel's NATO membership, or every NATO member is angered by Turkey's stance on Israel?
