Turkey has already become an efficient country in the region and globally, Turkish Foreign Ministry spokesperson Levent Gümrükçü said on Jan 8.

His remarks came in reply to a question about Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s recent statement that Turkey has no goal to be a regional or global power.

Turkey’s overall goal is to care for its citizens’ interest in foreign countries at the highest level and to give support for their problems, Gümrükçü said.

As a result of policies Turkey conducts, the country had a position both in its region and in the international arena, he said. “As of its current position, Turkey is already a regional power, but beyond its region, Turkey is a country whose cooperation and friendship are sought by others, having a high profile and weight,” said the spokesperson.

With a strong democracy and dynamic economy, Turkey could implement efficient diplomacy, therefore it could naturally become a regional power and an actor with influence and power, he added.
