Traffic chaos to end soon

Repair work on the cross-continental Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge will end Aug. 30, 17 days earlier than had been planned, the minister of transportation announced July 25.

Istanbul residents have had to endure major traffic chaos since the morning of June 18, when the Fatih Sultan Mehmet Bridge over the Bosphorus and the Haliç Bridge over the Golden Horn were partially closed for repair work for three months. “Repair work on four of the eight lanes will be completed by noon [July 27], but then the other four will undergo repair work,” said Transportation Minister Binali Yıldırım. “Istanbul is home to one out of five people in Turkey. Around 1 million vehicles cross the bridge every day; a single problem can cause major problems,” he added.
