A general in the rebel Free Syria Army said today that Syrian government forces had amassed around 170 tanks north of the city Aleppo, near the Turkish border, but there was no independent confirmation of the report.

General Mustafa al-Sheikh, head of the Higher Military Council, an association of senior officers who defected from President Bashar al-Assad's forces, said the tanks had assembled at the Infantry School near the village of Musalmieh northeast of the city of Aleppo, 30 kilometers from the Turkish border.

"The tanks are now at the Infantry School. They're either preparing to move to the border to counter the Turkish deployment or attack the rebellious [Syrian] towns and villages in and around the border zone north of Aleppo," Sheikh told Reuters by telephone from the border.

He said the tanks were mostly from the 17th Mechanised Division.

Turkey deployed air defense weaponry along its border with Syria yesterday, following Syria's downing of a Turkish warlplane over the Mediterranean on Friday.

The problem is we know how an armed conflicts may begin ,but do they end ? How can Turky prevent Syria from becoming the same trap to it's forces as Iraq or other examples in know history. Ankara must be sure that a stable and acceptable government will be established in Syria following military action . Without this, any attempt to take miltary action against Syria will be a success on the tactical side but a for the long run -I fear the result.

Their 30 kilometres away not 30 metres and their about fifty year old tanks that are no match against cluster bombs, they are no threat in the modern warfare, look what happened to Saddams tanks.@ Turk Uzan trouble with blowing up the tanks is that were killing our allies in side the tanks who are proberly sunnies,I dont think it will get to that ,the tanks will defect along with the soldiers to Turkey.

what is the difference between assads army and the boy scouts? The boy scouts dont have heavy artillary! Even the syrians are so stupid to attact Turkey as they know that NATO will crush them . The shooting down of the Turkish Jet was a great mistake and it could be someone wanted Turkey/Nato to free syria and kick out assad. Things like that happen in the middle east!

The Syrians have to protect their border should Turkey decide to invade. Remember, it was Erdogan who started all this, not Assad.

How far is our upgrade program for our LEO's..? I know Altai will take another year if not longer. But I though the LEO 2NG was ready to be implemented to all our Leopard 2's? (Leopard 2 Next Generation; 100% indigenous upgrade system for Leopard 2's) A few dozen NG2 would destroy Assads tanks But why worry when their old soviet scrap metal is no match vs our tanks and 170 tanks close by sounds like a "beautiful" easy target for artillery to me .. shell them the dust in case of any enemy action

sam stevens, I'm fairly certain that Turkiye can destroy the Alawite regime that makes up only 10 % of a country of 20 million without too much fuss.

Oh for goodness sake , it's inevitable this man will try to fire you all up, he wants his side to win , so of course he would love to have Turkey's assistance. Don't fall for it Turkey, unless you want to see many Turks killed !
