The case about the murder of casino king Omer Lutfu Topal, one of the most important links in the Susurluk case, ended yesterday in acquittal. The court ruled for the acquittal of eight suspects including four former special team police officers who had been tried for four and a half years, saying there was not, "Sufficient or credible evidence."

Attending the hearing at the Beyoglu First Court for Serious Crimes were the unarrested suspects, former special team officers Ayhan Carkin, Oguz Yorulmaz, Ercan Ersoy, Mustafa Altinok and Topal's former associates Sami Hostan and Ali Fevzi Bir. The other suspects, insurance agent Serdar Ozdag and Haluk Kirci, also tried for the massacre of left-wing students in Bahcelievler at the end of the 1970s, were absent.

The only concrete evidence in the file is the multiple phone calls of the suspects on the evening of the murder, evidence which the public prosecutor said in his last statement was insufficient to convict the suspects. Asked to make their last defense, the suspects said they agreed with the prosecutor.

At the end of the trial, the court delegation ruled unanimously for acquittal, saying there was not sufficient or credible evidence that the suspects had killed Omer Lutfu Topal. The suspects seemed highly pleased with the verdict. Answering a question from a correspondent, Sami Hostan said: "We were friends with you for years as we were being tried for a crime that we did not commit. Our friendship is now at an end."
