A number of students competing in a race marking the 93rd anniversary of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s visit to Ankara in the northern province of Kastamonu failed to complete the course due to freezing temperatures.

All students were challenged to finish the race despite the cold weather.

Two Somali students at the local imam-hatip vocational religious school, Abdulhani Ahmed Hassan and Abdiaziz Ahmet Salah, failed to finish and were taken to a hospital by ambulance."

"The weather is too cold here. It doesn't snow in Somalia, it only rains. That is why I had to give up after two kilometers," Salah told Anatolia news agency.

Another Somali student, Zekeriya Abdurrahman Muhammed, crossed the line in the middle of the group.

Hassan said he hoped to win next year's race.
