Main opposition leader Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu has expressed a strong reaction to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s remarks calling on people not to own credit cards.

“If the citizens are in debt, who is in charge of the economic policy? [The prime minister] is in charge but accuses the citizens. So, ban the credit cards too already,” Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu said during a fast-breaking dinner organized by the Republican People’s Party (CHP) for the families of fallen soldiers July 17.

“There are only credit cards left in the hands of the citizens. Problems such as unemployment have not been solved. Now the prime minister is evading this by saying ‘don’t use credit cards.’ You can’t obtain anything by accusing the citizens,” Kılıçdaroğlu said.

Erdoğan had publicly slammed banks for collecting a lot of money from the “poor,” during a speech on July 16.

“Those credit cards: Don’t have them. If everybody spends as much as they [banks] want, they would not even be able to earn that income. They could never be satiated,” he had said.
