Two road construction workers were killed and two more were injured early Jan. 30 on Istanbul’s E-5 highway after the four were struck from behind by a car whose driver fled the scene following the incident.

Yasin Özer and Nurrettin Aykalkan were killed at 1:30 a.m. after a car bearing the license plate 06 AF 8848 crashed through a series of warning pylons and hit the pair at their worksite in the city’s Bahçelievler district, trapping them against the rear of their asphalt truck from the hips down.

Emergency crews worked for 30 minutes to extract Özer, 36, and Aykalkan, 63, from between the car and the truck, before transferring the two men to hospital. The workers subsequently succumbed to their injuries.

Injuries to two other workers are not life threatening, according to doctors.

Police have launched an operation to apprehend the driver of the car.
