Norway's ombudsman for children's rights has suggested that circumcision should be replaced with a symbolic ritual instead, the Jerusalem Post has reported.

Dr. Anne Lindboe said Muslim and Jewish children should be protected "as all other children" and thus should not be forced to undergo a physical intervention on their bodies without their consent. Muslims and Jews should instead perform a bloodless, non-surgical ritual, she said.
The ombudsman before Lindboe had also suggested that an age of 15 should be set for children to undergo circumcision.
While the Muslim faith puts no age limitation on the ritual, the Jewish faith calls for the circumcision to take place when children are 8 days old.

@all who claim health benefits: the issue is unclear. The operation has a “median complication frequency of 1.5% for newborns and 6% for older children” (Wikipedia, “circumcision”). It’s more honest to admit that you went through a ritual that started as a passage to adulthood among your ancestor’s tribes. Your ancestors, who washed themselves once every 10 years (inadvertently, when they stumbled and fell into the river) could avoid infections by removing the foreskin. You? Take a shower daily!

@Ahmad. Circumcision is not a medical necessity. It´s an old habit from the Bronze age. Let the children decide themselves, when they´re old enough, if they want this operation to be done to their bodies or not.

Yes, children shouldn't be given any medicine if they are sick as they can't decide what changes they may bring. We should wait till they are adults to get their consent.

The Koran and to some extent Torah are very scientific and advanced of its time and it applies to the current and coming age as well, if Koran were to be just for the period they were revealed, then perhaps the God is a cheater and not worthy of worship. Koran doesn't contradict evolution as some would like to claim, if God is the creator, he is capable of creating men in whatever way - whether through slow evolution or fast, the concept of time is very fluid and dependent on the frame.

The Norwegian ombudsman for children´s rights have a point. Circumcision should be freely chosen by adults, never imposed on newborns or children. Children should have the right to body integrity just like anyone else. Let them decide themselves when they're 15.

In my opinion this is a flawed argument. Parents have the responsibilty to act on behalf of their children. Circumsicion is a health benefit. In southern Africa in order to halt the spread of AIDS circumsicion is highly encouraged. Most STD's are much harder to contract and spread for curcumcised males. I thank my parents for curcumcising me when I was a child, I also thank them for cutting my nails, and trimming my hair - or wait....maybe they need my permission for that aswell?

It is obviously a healthier choice. Not to mention that it is proven to have reduced AIDS cases in Africa significanly among the Muslim populations. Dont these people have better things to do, or more important things to worry about, like the neo-Nazis and potential mass murderers among them?

Do it in a hospital under medical supervision when the child is an infant! 15 is too old and the pain and recovery is much greater. Do it as a medical procedure on an infant and then if you want to have a religious ceremony when the child is the appropriate age then do so. We should not let people who have no medical training practice medicine. Simple. Ear piercers have more training in America than a circumcisor in Germany

@ Jinx Star: if circumcision was a health benefit to males, evolution would have eliminated that possibility, most probably. And if you think biological evolution is false and that Allah made us, well, then Allah made an error by constructing the male organ like that. And if you say that it is Allah who ordered you to circumcise your children, then Allah must be a mad architect. Imagine yourself creating every building with an extra balcony, which you then give orders to be chopped off.
