Some 67 new imam-hatip religious schools have been opened in Istanbul's 39 districts on the heels of controversial educational reforms, private broadcaster NTV reported on its website today.

Istanbul Provincial Education Directorate reportedly opened the new religious vocational schools in accordance with the “4+4+4” law, which will permit pupils to enter a vocational educational stream after just four years of education.

The Anatolian-side districts of Ümraniye and Sultanbeyli will each host five new imam-hatip schools, while four each will be established in the European-side districts of Eyüp and Büyükçekmece.

Around 450 schools will be reorganized as elementary schools, junior high schools and imam-hatip junior high schools.

Female secondary and high school students will also be permitted to wear headscarves in elective religion classes that were introduced as part of the reform bill. A number of other elective courses were also introduced in addition to the two new elective religion courses, the Quran and the “Life of Our Prophet, His Majesty."

The reform has come under fire on the grounds that it will allow conservative parents to remove girls from school and encourage child labor.

IN response to mara mcglothin "HOw do you know these girls are beautiful since they are covering the pretty party?" Indeed the girls are beautiful, as MR Somali said. What makes them beautiful? Apart from the headscarf, knowledge beautifies one. They seem to have got some of it :) .....

MashaAllah, my Turkish sisters look so beautiful in Hijab, Islam was removed from Turkish society by use of Bullets and Bayonets, it is nice to see society going to Islam , by means of ballot.

What an heinous act of fabrication. It mixes statistical data with fabricated lies to create an image of horror and fear. At the start the narrative tells you that there are more school with conservative elements which allows more conservative girls to be schooled as they feel not to be forced to compromise their religious belief, but at the end it says new school regulations would lead conservative parents to remove their children from school and force them to CHILD LABOR. What a stupidity.

The same laws that banned Imam schools also banned foreign language schools, so does this mean that Robert College is back in business as an complete English speaking high school? YOu can't have it both ways. The AKP is always quick to impliment the laws in favor of religion. How about 301? the new constitution? and on and on

This violates the principles of the secular state. The AKP used the cover of democracy and the EU to bring in a religious agenda. It's not going to work.

Mr Somalia, do you live in Turkey, because unlike Somalia which is run totally by corrupt war lords we in Turkey do not want to see it become an Islamic state and turn into your country thank you very much,
