The ratio of electricity produced from natural gas in Turkey is down from 52-53 percent to 45 percent, due to abundant rainfall, which powers water turbines, Energy Minister Taner Yıldız said.

“Our goal is to reach 30 percent by 2023,” Yılıdız said at a fast-breaking dinner on July 24.

Yıldız added that he was pleased that two state-run companies, Türk Petrolleri Anonim Ortaklığı (TPAO) and Elektrik Üretim Anonim Şirketi (EÜAŞ), topped the Istanbul Chamber of Industry’s (İSO) list of the country’s top 500 industrial establishments. “The increase in petrol prices last year had a negative impact on our current account deficit. However, this situation was positive for Turkiye Petrolleri TPAO, which made profits of roughly 11.8 billion Turkish Liras, or close to $1 billion. EÜAŞ was also able to conserve water in the production of natural gas,” Yıldız said.
