Police prevent another Saturday Mothers meeting in Istanbul
Turkish authorities have banned a protest vigil of the "Saturday Mothers" marking the forced disappearances of hundreds of people in the last decades. Click through for the story in photos...
Saturday Mothers have been holding the protest every Saturday since 1995 but Turkish officials announced last week that it would no longer be permitted.
Demonstrators who arrived Galatasaray Square on Sept. 1 were turned away by security forces.
The group organized a sit-in protest in the nearby Büyük Parmakkapı Street and dispersed after police warned them.
“Should we turn a blind eye to the exploitation of motherhood by a terrorist organization?” Interior Ministry Süleyman Soylu had said on Aug. 27, associating the protesters with the illegal PKK.
