Police chief shot dead before cameras in Turkey

A district police chief in the Mediterranean province of Antalya lost his life when an assailant’s pistol went off at a gas station at around 3 p.m. in the district of Konyaaltı yesterday.

Law enforcement officials then detained the assailant, Celal Gökçe, 50, while Konyaaltı District Police Chief Uğur Gökcan lost his life in the hospital due to the injury he sustained.

The incident happened as district Police Chief Gökcan attempted to persuade an assailant to surrender and began moving toward him to give him a cigarette.

However, the assailant tried to take the police chief hostage, and his gun went off during the ensuing brawl, killing Gökcan, according to reports.
