The main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) has condemned the Dec. 10 Istanbul bombings, saying the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) cannot “achieve its objectives through such crimes.”

The CHP convened its Central Executive Board on Dec. 12 following the deadly attack that struck Istanbul’s Beşiktaş district over the weekend.

“The government should take the necessary measures instead of just condemning,” the party’s statement said, stressing that the ruling authorities should “criticize themselves” over the attack.

395 killed, 2,941 wounded in terrorist attacks since 2015

The CHP demanded a parliamentary inquiry to investigate security failures over the series of terrorist attacks that has shaken Turkey in recent months, recalling that 395 people lost their lives in attacks since June 2015.

“Unfortunately, 395 people have lost their lives and 2,941 others were injured in 26 bomb attacks that have taken place in 11 cities since June 5, 2015, as a result of the AKP’s failure to take effective, sustainable and concrete security measures after each attack,” the CHP lawmakers’ statement said on Dec. 12.

The CHP lawmakers demanded thorough investigations into security weaknesses in order to identify the perpetrators of the attacks. The officials who have neglected and ignored responsibilities in the attacks should be dismissed and necessary measures should be taken to prevent such incidents from happening again.

“Considering there have been eight terrorist attacks and explosions in Istanbul in the past year-and-a-half, it is obvious that effective, sufficient and continuous security measures have not been taken after each terrorist attack. What the Interior Ministry, the Istanbul Governor’s Office, and the Istanbul Provincial Security Directorate did or did not do to take concrete security measures are in need of a clear explanation,” the statement added.
